Name of Your Business: Auntie Cathie’s Kitchen
Auntie Cathie’s Kitchen is a quaint, vintage cafe serving breakfast and lunch and dedicated gluten free bakery featuring fresh ingredients, using local where we can.
What inspires you?
There are so many things that inspire me…things that help me do my job better, like beautiful, fresh ingredients from a farmer’s market, a ripe avocado, ruby red raspberries to name a few. Then there are the day to day things like the sun shining, a phone call with my mother and a nice long walk.
What’s the best part of owning your own business?
It is really exciting to have the dream of starting your own thing and actually doing it. And once you’ve started, the long road of building it up and all of the adventures is takes you on as you go. There are good times and bad, but since the business is yours, it really adds quite an exciting chapter to your life.
How do you keep your business current?
By keeping it consistent. Once you have something good and people know you for that, I think it is really important to maintain what exactly it is that your customers are coming for.
What is your most popular product?
There are a few, but I think the desserts would rate very high in popularity, followed by our breakfast menu with it’s eclectic flair and fresh ingredients.
What is the one tool you couldn’t live without?
My 62 cent plastic bowl scraper.
How do you relax?
I don’t think I do too much relaxing, but when I do have free time I love to go to Boston or New York, catch up with friends and see a really good band. If I’m really tired, then home it is on the couch with some good old cookbooks from Saver’s, a cup of tea and the cat.
What is your motto or theme song?
Keep it simple…I definitely learned this the hard way!
What would people be surprised to know about you?
Probably that I don’t have a “dream kitchen” at home. I don’t even think I have a full set of silverware.
What’s the nicest compliment you’ve received about your business?
There have been so many wonderful things said about my business, but I think the true compliment is certainly all of the wonderful people that have come to my cafe and how they have followed me over the years to my different locations. I have a very dedicated group of “fans” and to me, that says more than any words really could.
How did you get started?
With a card table and a hand painted sandwich board sign by the side of the road, selling muffins & handmade soaps. I still have my little cardboard sign with the things I had to offer and the prices on it written in Sharpie.
What do you do when you’re having a bad day?
I eat something really decadent like a big, juicy burger followed by a big chocolate whoopie pie. After that it’s hard to remember what all the fuss was about in the first place!
