Q & A
What inspires you?
Being able to wake up every morning and be a part of the awakening of humanity.
What’s the best part of owning your own business?
Time flexibility. Being able to work really hard during my best working times, take fitness breaks when I need to, and stay healthy because my kitchen is always nearby and chuck full of produce.
How do you keep your business current?
As yoga instructors we’re constantly going to trainings and classes to stay inspired and keep our classes fresh. I go to New York City a lot for trainings and classes. I’m planning to go to national conferences and yoga festivals this year in Los Angeles and Vermont. Internet helps tremendously. I use the internet to stay abreast of the latest teaching trends and news in the yoga industry.
What is your most popular product?
Level 1 classes. Because there is so little yoga in the area we have tons of beginners. Level 1 classes are POPULAR!
What is the one tool you couldn’t live without?
My business software system MINDBODYONLINE. They are a company based out of California that created software for businesses like yoga and pilates studios. The capability goes way beyond checking people into class and running analytical reports. I don’t know how I ever got along without them. Their software makes running my business a dream.
How do you relax?
Sometimes I do restorative yoga at home. The nice thing about that is you can stay in the pose as long as you want! Sometimes I fall asleep in a restorative pose, or in legs up the wall. Also, I make an effort to take a day or two every couple of weeks and get out of town – go to Boston and see friends or family. I find that helps my mental focus tremendously, and I am ready to get back into it and work hard when I return home.
What is your motto or theme song?
There are no shortcuts. I tried, and that just doesn’t work. It’s about passion, dedication, and hard work. I would have it no other way.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I got my degrees in geology, worked at ExxonMobil in Houston making lots o’ money. I quit to do this. I’m way happier. But I do look back sometimes. It was a lot of money.
What’s the nicest compliment you’ve received about your business?
People say they feel relaxed the instant they walk in the door. They don’t even have to do the yoga, the space exudes it.
How did you get started?
I was doing my first yoga teacher training 6 years ago and had a really intense experience of awakening. I felt that I understood to a certain degree what kind of pain the world was holding. From there on I had to teach to help to alleviate that pain.
What do you do when you’re having a bad day?
I stop what I’m doing, go for a walk and go to the sauna. I always feel like it’s a whole different day after I do that.
