I was so excited to have an excuse to head to Mystic, CT to meet this month’s Featured Betty, Yumiko Fletcher. Even though it was a [very] chilly winter day, as soon as I walked through the door at Hana Floral Design, I was greeted with a warm smile.

Hana Floral Design has been creating beautiful wedding flowers for the last ten years. Yumiko says, “For me, Hana is something bigger than just doing wedding flowers. We are part of one of life’s most momentous occasions and to partake in that is extraordinary. It is my way of sharing something beautiful with the world, and I am indeed grateful for it.”

Q&A

Before you began your career creating floral masterpieces, what did you do?

Prior to working with flowers, I was working as a technical recruiter in New York. I paired IT professionals with the appropriate job. I did this for about 5 years during the Internet boom.

How did the idea come about for opening Hana Floral Design?

Unfortunately, I lost my mom suddenly and decided to quit my job. I knew I wanted to get back to my creative roots, but wasn’t sure how yet. I took some time off that summer and worked part time at a little nursery and flower shop. I really loved it. My boss said I was a “natural” so I took a few classes and started taking steps towards owning my own business!

I know I’ll likely not make the kind of income I made in the past, but I love what I do, and that sense of pride, fulfillment and gratitude is priceless.

How has owning a business changed your perspective on life?

I know I’ll likely not make the kind of income I made in the past, but I love what I do, and that sense of pride, fulfillment and gratitude is priceless.

What obstacles or challenges have you faced in your career, and how did you overcome them?

There are always challenges being thrown my way, but somehow you get through it. Early on, I relied pretty heavily on a freelancer and when she left, I was so worried. But I eventually found someone new and realized that no one is irreplaceable.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I absolutely love yoga. It is a relatively new passion of mine. I also love spending time with my family and friends. And whenever I can, I love to travel.

What inspires you?

Traveling to new places for sure. Fashion and interiors also inspire me.

What is the one tool you couldn’t live without?

My Felcos!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I am a classically trained opera singer.

What’s the nicest compliment you’ve received in your career?

We have been so unbelievably lucky to have such amazing clients and we’ve had numerous thank you’s. Recently, I received a lovely note from one of my 2014 brides who said I was the one vendor she had no doubt about and trusted implicitly. That was very sweet.

What advice do you have for young women entrepreneurs?

I say just “GO for it!” Do what you love. Don’t waste time on a job you don’t. There are no guarantees in life, so you might as well try, rather than stay safe in a job you don’t really love.

What do you do when you’re having a bad day?

Go to a yoga class if I can! Also, I love to go for a run or walk along the shore. This helps so much with clearing my head!
